Volume II / Issue 18 — 31 August 2021
Being human has its ups and its downs. If the past year and a half taught us anything, though, it’s that humans are an incredibly resilient species. We all experience grief, loss, and fear, just as we all experience joy, love, and hope. Our experiences are both shared and personal. My loss doesn’t have to be the same as your loss, and yet we both know what loss feels like, and we can connect with each other as a result.
In the coming weeks, we are releasing two books that explore different aspects of what it means to “be human.” In Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo’s book Get Out of the Red Zone, she takes you on a journey of understanding how our brains work so that we can transform our stress into success. Based on real-life experience and grounded in research, Dr. E makes sense of our humanness in tangible, accessible ways. Taylor Wray, on the other hand, uses words to invite us to embrace our humanity and all it has to offer us.
In his second book of poetry, Sinking and Resurfacing: Poetic Reflections on Being Human, Taylor gives us a glimpse into his private world, prompting us to pause and reflect on our own. For me, his words can magically transport me to another place and time, and I am the better for it.
Being human is messy and glorious, challenging and amazing. It’s everything all wrapped up into one manifestation of life expressed 7 billion ways. How lucky we are to have guides and poets to help us along the way.
All my best,

“This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.”
